Top Tools from Oct 5–11, 2026

  1. A 16.9 MB speech-to-text model from Cactus Compute, the team behind the Needle tool-calling model, that runs on the CPU with no other dependencies. It transcribes English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Polish, detecting the language unless you set it, in passes of up to 30 seconds that are windowed for longer audio, and streams from a live microphone; calls can return word timestamps, favour product names and other keywords you supply, or output speech embeddings. On an Apple M4 Pro the team measures 11 ms to the first token on a 10-second clip against 73 ms for Whisper base, and reports lower word error rates than Whisper base on LibriSpeech, the SPGISpeech and Earnings-22 financial-call sets and the FLEURS multilingual average, but higher ones on TED talks, AMI meeting recordings and the MLS average. Whistle shares Needle's engine, so one binary can take a spoken request and return the tool calls it implies. Prebuilt engines cover 17 targets, among them macOS, Linux, Windows on ARM, Android, iOS, watchOS, RISC-V and the browser, installed with pip install cactus-needle or the needle command-line tool; the engine sends telemetry by default, which NEEDLE_TELEMETRY=0 turns off. The weights and the Python package are Apache-2.0 and free, while the C++ engine ships as prebuilt binaries on Hugging Face. 13.9k stars on the Needle repository as of 12 October 2026

  2. REA
Reverse Engineer Anything, an MCP server plus workflow instructions that let a coding agent take apart software it has no source for - native binaries down to functions, strings, cross-references and call graphs, JavaScript and Electron apps from their folders or ASAR archives, .NET assemblies, and browser or process activity compared across runs. The pitch is to see a feature in someone else's app, have the agent explain how it works with the evidence, and build your own version. Running npx rea-agents setup proposes changes for the agents you pick - Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Grok Build and others - backs up their configuration and waits for approval; native analysis uses an existing Hopper, Ghidra or IDA install, and setup can install Hopper for you. Analysis runs locally, the same tools work from a terminal, and the site's worked examples take apart Chrome's offline dinosaur game, the percent button in Windows Calculator and the DX-Ball game. Needs Node.js. MIT, free, with no paid plan published. 119k stars as of 12 October 2026

  3. The second major version of the Rust-built DataFrame library for Python and Rust. Lazy queries now run on the streaming engine by default and spill to disk once memory use passes about 80 percent of RAM, with a 64 GB default disk budget, for sorts, window functions and many expressions so far; out-of-core joins and group-bys are planned. Arrow maps become a native Map type instead of a list of structs, schema mismatches surface earlier under stricter defaults, and SQL is promoted to a first-class interface with join reordering, common-subplan elimination and dynamic predicate filters. Because of the streaming default, joins, group-bys and unpivots no longer keep row order unless you pass maintain_order=True, and a migration guide covers the other breaking changes. MIT and free; the company behind it sells Polars Cloud, which runs the same queries on AWS or your own Kubernetes cluster for 0.05 US dollars per vCPU-hour, with 10,000 free CPU hours a month on your own cluster. 40.1k stars as of 12 October 2026

  4. A library of 217 animated ASCII-art pieces for web pages from Shubham (bas3line) - loaders, charts, type effects, 3D shapes, physics demos, creatures, 15 full-colour scenes and logos for 29 programming languages, 21 companies and 23 Linux distributions, all browsable on the site. Each piece is a small TypeScript module with no dependencies, used through components for React, Next.js and Astro, as a single custom HTML tag loaded from one script with no build step, or in a terminal with npx ascii.rest. Visitors who ask their system for reduced motion see only the first frame, and the Astro component renders that frame on the server. 5. An open-source engine by Daniel G. Taylor, written in Go, that rebuilds Cavedog's 1997 real-time strategy game Total Annihilation for modern computers. The three missions of the original game's demo play in desktop Chrome, Edge or Safari with nothing to install; the native beta for Windows, macOS and Linux runs the full game from files you own, from GOG, Steam or the original CDs. Single-player skirmish, Survival and the campaign are broadly complete, with a zoomable 2.5D battlefield, a modern GPU renderer with lighting alongside a classic CPU one, replays of every battle and documented game formats for modders. Online skirmish for 2 to 10 players and Survival for 2 or 3 work from the beta or from desktop Chrome and Edge with a join code, under Modern, Community 3.9 or Strict 3.1 rules, and every player needs their own game files. Public beta, with known bugs and save compatibility still being refined, and not affiliated with the game's owners. MIT for the engine, free, with GitHub Sponsors. 130 stars as of 12 October 2026

  6. The Android 17 release of LineageOS, the community Android distribution that keeps phones, tablets and TV boxes on current software after their makers stop updating them, launching on 24 devices with more to follow as maintainers bring them up. New browser-based flash tools at flash.lineageos.org install it over WebUSB using ADB, Fastboot, Samsung's Odin protocol or Amlogic's burn protocol, alongside the per-device wiki guides that remain the supported path. The bundled apps gain Canvas, a basic photo editor, the updater now streams updates to cut install time on A/B devices, the Twelve music player improves Jellyfin support and the Jelly browser can pin sites as app-like shortcuts. An experimental generic build has booted on ordinary x86-64 PCs, Apple silicon Macs and Snapdragon X laptops. Devices on the old 4.4 and 4.9 Linux kernels stay on LineageOS 22.2, which keeps getting monthly security patches, and users of official builds upgrade without wiping. Free and open source under Apache-2.0, with the Linux kernel under GPL-2.0, funded by donations through PayPal and Patreon to LineageOS LLC, which is not a tax-exempt non-profit

  7. A web page from SpeakingOfBrad that turns a phone, tablet, laptop or smart TV into a full-screen sign, with the message written into the link itself, so a kiosk browser or a remotely managed screen needs nothing but a URL. The text after the hash sign fills the screen and resizes to fit, with Markdown for headings and bold, line breaks, and slides separated by two pipes that rotate on a set interval; settings in the same link choose colours, numbered font styles, animations such as pulse, rainbow and scroll, a countdown to a date or for a duration with its own closing text, and QR codes for links, Wi-Fi networks, calls, texts and email, generated in the browser. Because the message sits in the URL fragment, browsers never send it to the server, and nothing is stored. No app or account. MIT, free. 163 stars as of 12 October 2026

  8. A side project from Alec D. that decodes the carrier settings Apple, Google and Samsung ship inside their phone firmware and lays them side by side - APNs, VoLTE, VoNR, Wi-Fi Calling, 5G standalone and the rest, per carrier and per phone. Pick the features you need and it lists the carriers that turn them on for your model; open a carrier to compare its iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy settings, or diff two OS builds to see what an update changed. It also reads each build's modem configurations and band combinations, and its API finds which settings a SIM selects from its MCC/MNC, SPN, IMSI or ICCID. Data comes from iOS restore images and over-the-air carrier updates for the iPhone 15 and later, Pixel OTA images since October 2020, and Samsung's CSC packs for US Galaxy S, Z Fold and Z Flip models launched since 2025; the author says some decoders are still being checked. Free JSON API and a daily CC0 dataset, with the code under MIT. 70 stars as of 12 October 2026

  9. A macOS command-line tool from Franz Enzenhofer that lets AI coding agents draw a big arrow, ring or box with a sign on top of every window, for the moments an agent needs you to click Allow, approve a payment or type a 2FA code it should not handle itself. It points at a button by its accessibility label in a named app, at a Chrome or Safari tab by title, at a window or at screen coordinates; clicks pass through, keyboard focus stays where it was, and every arrow removes itself after a time limit, when the agent that drew it exits or when you reply. Values in double braces become copy buttons, a flag reads the sign aloud, and another renders the scene to a PNG for documentation. Drawing needs no macOS permission, and it is one Swift binary with no daemon, account or telemetry, installed with Homebrew; bigarrow install-skill teaches Claude Code and Codex to use it. macOS 14 or later. MIT, free. 632 stars as of 12 October 2026

  10. A native Mac browser from Manifold AI that hands work to the Claude Code or Codex agent you already run - press Cmd-E on any page to send a task or a question, and the agent works on it in the background. Agents browse in their own tabs without your logins and click or type only when you allow it, new tasks are read-only until you grant edits, edits in git repositories can be undone, web tasks are told to stop before paying, ordering, sending, posting or deleting, and agents cannot type into password, card or one-time-code fields; the makers say this lowers prompt-injection risk rather than removing it. Beyond the agents it sorts open tabs into groups, keeps history as a daily journal you can search by description, builds a comparison table from up to six tabs, stores passwords in the Keychain behind Touch ID and imports sign-ins from Chrome, Arc or Safari, with history and passwords kept on the Mac. Beta 0.1.6 for Apple silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later, needing Claude Code 2.1.261 or Codex CLI 0.144.4 or newer. Free proprietary software, with the AI features running on your existing Claude or Codex plan and no API keys

  11. A social media API from Zernio, formerly Late, a bootstrapped nine-person company in Girona, Spain, that publishes and schedules posts, reads analytics, handles comments and DMs and runs paid ads across 17 platforms - Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, X, Threads, Bluesky, Reddit, Telegram, Google Business and others - and ad networks including Meta, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn and OpenAI Ads, through the platforms' official APIs. The same account adds phone numbers, calls, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp and iMessage, and agents reach it through an MCP server and a command-line tool alongside webhooks and SDKs in eight languages. Pricing is per connected account each month, with every feature on every account - the first two free, then 6 US dollars each for accounts 3 to 10, 3 dollars for 11 to 100 and 1 dollar beyond that - plus metered charges for sent messages past 10,000 a month, X API calls at X's own rates, phone numbers, call minutes and SMS; billing is monthly only. The service is closed source; the SDKs, CLI and MCP plugins are MIT or Apache-2.0

  12. A self-hosted, Gmail-style mail client from Paul Lützner that connects the mailboxes you already have - IMAP, Gmail and Outlook, sending aliases included - syncs them into your own PostgreSQL database and shows them in one inbox with one search box and one set of labels. It is not a mail server and does not host your domain; because the mail is synced locally, search runs against your own database and your mail stays readable when a provider does not. New mail arrives through IMAP IDLE and Gmail and Outlook push, filters nest any, all and none conditions and can be applied to mail that arrived earlier, and a calendar alongside syncs both ways with Google, Microsoft and CalDAV. Attachments can be saved to or pulled from Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Nextcloud, Immich and Paperless-ngx. Optional language-model features - search by meaning, draft replies, thread summaries and sorting into tabs - are off by default, switched on one at a time, and use an Ollama server or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint you name. Built on PHP 8.4, Symfony 8 and PostgreSQL 18, installed with Docker Compose or from the TrueNAS app catalogue, and usable as an installable web app; early native Android and iOS apps ship no LICENSE, so they are legally all-rights-reserved as of 12 October 2026. AGPL-3.0, free, with GitHub Sponsors. 270 stars as of 12 October 2026

  13. The first stable 2.0 release of FileBrowser Quantum, Graham Steffaniak's heavily reworked fork of the File Browser web file manager, whose original repository is now archived. It serves folders from several sources through the browser with include and exclude rules, indexed real-time search, WebDAV, share links with expiry and anonymous access, thumbnails for office files, video and 3D models, and sign-in through OIDC, LDAP, JWT, a password with 2FA or a reverse proxy; the original's shell-command feature is gone. Version 2 adds per-source permissions to view, download, modify, create and delete, user activity logs with charts and CSV export, a refreshed media player with an audio visualiser, and opt-in monthly deployment analytics with a preview of exactly what would be sent, and fresh installs now get a random admin password instead of admin/admin. Upgrading needs a database and config migration, with a tool for the config. Runs as a single binary or a Docker image. Apache-2.0, free, and the README promises it will stay free. 8.7k stars as of 12 October 2026
